FOURTEEN

Explaining to the girls that Daddy was going to Maine without Mommy had been an emotionally demanding task. Sarah was certain the girls didn’t truly understand the implications of their circumstances. They probably thought it was to be an extended vacation. When they did eventually discover the truth of their new reality, they’d be devastated. But Sarah didn’t want to think about that right now.

She’d held her tears back until Mark’s vehicle drove away, hauling the precious cargo they’d created together. She thought the dull ache in her heart might consume her. Not only would she not see the girls for at least six months, but she’d never be held in Mark’s strong arms again. If someone would have told her a year ago that this would be her future, she never would have believed it.

She had yet to tell Jathan of Mark’s sudden departure. That could wait till tomorrow. Sarah briefly deliberated whether she would attend meeting with Jathan and their girls in Amish country or if she’d go to Pastor Joe’s service. She finally decided on the latter, since this could possibly be her final visit to her home church of the past five years.

Now, Sarah walked through the silent house that she and Mark had once shared with their girls. Oh, how she’d miss them all. She’d spent hours in tears last night and now the lack of sleep was beginning to take a toll on her. But she wouldn’t take a nap for fear of arriving late in Lancaster. She had a promise to keep.

Two hours later, she drove up the lane to Jathan’s farm. Wouldn’t he be surprised when he learned the current state of events? Sarah’s thoughts on the matter were bittersweet. She knew that her place was to be with Jathan now, but how could she just move forward? How could she forget about Mark and the girls and the last ten years of her life? Why had God brought her down this tumultuous path?

Jathan came to her vehicle’s door the moment it rolled to a stop. Clearly, he was eager to see her.

Her opened door was met with a frown from Jathan, a stark contrast from the excitement he’d exhibited just seconds ago. “Sarah, what is wrong? You look like you’ve been crying.”

Sarah looked to the house where a couple of their daughters stood near the door. “May you and I talk alone?”

“Jah, of course.” He looked back to the house and realized the source of her reticence. “I will tell the girls to wait for lunch. Let’s go for a walk.”

Sarah nodded and watched as Jathan informed the girls of their plans. The girls promptly returned inside the house, and Sarah met Jathan at the porch.

“Come.” He nodded toward the pasture and she walked in step by his side. When they were far enough away from the house, Jathan spoke. “What is wrong, Sarah?”

She took a deep breath and tried to keep her tears at bay. “Mark and the girls are gone.
